Optical Fiber

An optical fiber is made up of the core (carrying the light pulses), the cladding (reflecting the light pulses back into the core) and the buffer coating (protecting the core and cladding from moisture, damage, etc). Together, all of this creates a fiber optic which can carry up to 10 million messages at any time using light pulses. Fiber optics is the overlap of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers. Optical fibers are...

OSI Seven-Layer Model

In the 1980s, the European-dominated International Standards Organization (ISO), began to develop its Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) networking suite. OSI has two major components: an abstract model of networking (the Basic Reference Model, or seven-layer model), and a set of concrete protocols. The standard documents that describe OSI are for sale and not currently available online. Parts of OSI have influenced Internet protocol development, but none more than the abstract model itself, documented in OSI 7498 and its various addenda. In...

The Prince’ is a political treatise by the Florentine public servant and political theorist Niccolo Machiavelli. It is the most remembered, and the work responsible for bringing “Machiavellian” into wide usage as a pejorative term. It has also been suggested by some critics that the piece is, in fact, a satire. The views expounded by Machiavelli in the Prince may seem extreme. However, his whole life was spent in Florence at a time of continuous political conflict. Accordingly, Machiavelli emphasizes the need for stability in a prince’s principality; at stake is its preservation. The book was written primarily as a guide for the prince to maintain his power and only secondarily as a guide for maintain the principality, the purpose of which was to keep the prince in power. The theories expressed in The Prince describe methods that an aspiring prince can use to acquire the throne, or an existing prince can use to maintain his reign. According to Machiavelli, the greatest moral good is a virtuous and stable state, and actions to protect the country are therefore justified even if they are cruel. Machiavelli strongly suggests, however, that the prince must not be hated. He states, “…a wise prince should establish himself on that which is his own control and not in that of others; he must endeavor to avoid hatred, as is noted”. He also says “it is best to be both feared and loved; however, if one cannot be both it is better to be feared than loved”.

Aristotle attempts to explain ‘poetry’ through ‘first principles’ and by discerning its different genres and component elements. His analysis of tragedy constitutes the core of his discussion. “Although Aristotle’s Poetics is universally acknowledged in Western critical tradition,” Marvin Carlson explains, “almost every detail about his seminal work has aroused divergent opinions.” The centerpiece of Aristotle’s surviving work is his examination of tragedy:
